Get Your Brain in the Fast Lane

Find out what mental stimulation and brain games can do for your memory and other cognitive functions

To be able to read and understand an article in a magazine, write a note with a pen, recognize a friend in a crowded shop, remember the first and last name of your son’s friend . . . The list is endless! All these activities and knowledge require your brain to be in good shape. The basis of a fit brain are mental capacities also known as cognitive functions. The main cognitive functions are: attention, memory, language, logical reasoning, and visual and spatial acuity.
What is good for your body is also good for your brain. For instance, a balanced diet is absolutely necessary for optimal brain functioning, as the brain requires glucose, vitamins, and unsaturated fatty acids. Regular exercise is necessary for blood flow that carries oxygen to the brain, and a good night’s sleep enables you to learn new things and process daily tasks.

Tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and too much stress not only prevent our bodies from performing well, they also impair our brain functioning. When we take care of our bodies by eating well, getting enough sleep and exercise, and avoiding harmful behavior patterns, we also take care of our brains

Key vitamin deficiency linked to tripled risk of dementia: study

PARIS (AFP) - Lack of folate, also called vitamin B-9, may triple the risk of developing dementia in old age, according to a study published Tuesday.

Researchers in South Korea measured naturally occurring folate levels in 518 elderly persons, none of whom showed any signs of dementia, and then tracked their development over 2.4 years.

At the end of the period, 45 of the patients had developed dementia, including 34 diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, said the study, published by the British Medical Association's Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

New Helmet May Help Treat Alzheimer's Disease By Using Infrared Rays

Researchers now believe that they have found a promising new treatment for Alzheimer's disease, and it comes in the form of a helmet that shoots infrared rays into your head. It sound a little crude, but these researchers say that this treatment has worked on mice to help restore memory and stimulate brain cell growth, and they will now begin testing on humans.

If you ask me, this new Alzheimer's helmet looks a little bit like something out of science fiction movie, but if it works than who cares what it looks like. There's still a lot of testing to be done, says the inventor of this device Dr. Gordon Dougal from Durham University, before the Alzheimer's helmet is actually used to treat the disease - but early testing is very promising.
